Surgery Information / Job Description
We are offering an outstanding opportunity for a highly motivated colleague to join our Small Animal Surgery service at DWR to focus on orthopaedic surgery.
DWR is a busy, purpose-built specialist referral-only small animal veterinary hospital based in Six Mile Bottom, Suffolk, UK, located only 10 miles from the vibrant and historic university city of Cambridge, with excellent connections to London, the Midlands and the stunning East Anglian coast. Stansted airport is also only 30 minutes away by car.
The hospital is fully equipped with the surgical, diagnostic and hospitalisation facilities commensurate with a flagship specialist veterinary hospital and also has an on-site reference laboratory with both in-house clinical pathology and diagnostic histopathology. As part of our on-going drive for excellence, we have now started building a 30,000 sq.ft. extension that will double the size of our facilities and create a truly world-class hospital.
Aside from the excellent, positive and collaborative working environment that places great value on team-work, DWR offers a competitive remuneration package including a generous salary, pension provision, achievable bonus scheme, private health insurance, income protection and life assurance schemes and family-focused leave provision alongside annual study leave and CPD allowances.  Flexible working requests will also be actively considered.
DWR was founded in 2003 by Professor Dick White and has grown rapidly to become the largest private veterinary referral hospital in the UK, currently employing 35 specialist veterinary clinicians, 30 residents and 14 interns who, along with our 200-strong support staff, provide 24/7 referral-only services for patients across England in soft tissue surgery, orthopaedic surgery, ophthalmology, diagnostic imaging, neurology, anaesthesia and analgesia, internal medicine, oncology, dermatology, cardiology, physiotherapy, clinical pathology and histopathology.
As we are also an Educational Partner of the University of Nottingham, the successful candidate will be awarded Honorary Associate Professor status with this institution.  Clinical research activity and participation is therefore positively encouraged and colleagues currently collaborate with scientific, medical and veterinary institutions across the UK and further afield in many on-going studies.
Person Specification
Due to an increasing caseload the orthopaedic surgery department is expanding and we now seek to recruit an additional orthopaedic surgeon to our team and for the appropriately experienced candidate, the position of Head of Service may be available. We currently have two full-time specialist orthopaedic surgeons, who are supported by one post-residency clinical fellow, four ECVS residents, a dedicated surgical intern and team of qualified theatre nurses as well as a team of four soft tissue surgery specialists.
Applicants will be Board-Certified in Small Animal Surgery or Small Animal Orthopaedic Surgery by the American, European, Australian or Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and be eligible for RCVS Specialist status. Experienced residency-trained candidates eligible to sit the qualifying specialist examinations for these colleges will also be considered for the role of Clinical Fellow, with promotion to the role of Specialist expected upon successful completion of the board examinations. The successful applicant will need to hold a UK valid current driving licence and be a member of, or eligible to become a member, of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
